How To Make Your Own Mala Bracelet

Because mala bracelets are a personal accessory, many people like to make their own. Thankfully, it is straightforward to make a mala bracelet, and you can buy a kit that contains everything you need.

For example, the Fishdown 418 pcs Mala Bracelet Making Kit contains 6 healing stone beads, including pink rose quartz, green amazonite, red agate, and tiger eye. It also has black lava beads if you want to make a mala to infuse essential oils. Aside from the main beads, the set contains 6 guru beads, spacer beads, and black and white strings.

So once you’ve got your supplies, how do you make your own mala bracelet?

First, decide if you want to make a single or multi-layer bracelet. Depending on your wrist size, you’ll need between 21 and 24 beads for a single-layer bracelet. For a multi-layer bracelet that you wrap 4 to 5 times, use 108 mala beads.

If making a single-layer mala bracelet:

  1. Cut your cord to double the length of your wrist measurement. For reference, a small adult wrist is around 7 inches, a medium wrist is approximately 8 inches, and a large wrist is about 9 inches.
  2. Fold the cord in half and secure one end by tieing it.
  3. Thread your guru bead first, followed by all standard beads. Note that you don’t need to put a counter bead or tie a knot between each one.
  4. Tie the ends together using a surgeon’s knot, securing it with glue.
  5. Cut the excess cord, then hide the knot by sliding it under a bead.

If making a multi-layer wrist mala:

  1. Cut the cord to 5 feet, then coat one end with glue. Once dry, cut it to a pointed tip to make it easier to thread the beads.
  2. Tie the other end of the cord, leaving a 5-to-8-inch tail to fit the tassel.
  3. Thread the first mala bead, pulling a tight knot after, before threading the second one. Alternatively, use spacer beads between each one.
  4. Continue this process until you have weaved all 108 beads. Then, tie the two ends of the string together with a simple knot.
  5. String your guru bead onto the excess cord at the bottom. Tie another knot to secure it in place.
  6. Attach and secure your tassel by tieing multiple times.

FAQS

image 34

What Is The Purpose Of A Mala Beads Bracelet?

Traditionally, mala beads are used to help maintain focus and count repetitions of mantras during meditation practice. However, nowadays, mala bracelets serve as a symbol of spirituality and a reminder to be present.

Wearing mala beads during yoga or meditation can help you maintain steady breathing. A wrist mala can also help you cultivate more moments of mindfulness throughout the day and progress in your spiritual practice. Many people choose to infuse their malas with a specific intention, such as to attract abundance, relieve anxiety, or cultivate feelings of calm and grounding.

What Wrist Do You Wear A Mala Bracelet On?

While you can wear a mala bracelet on either wrist, some traditions believe it should be worn on the right wrist. This is because the right hand is seen as purer than the left. Moreover, because wrist malas carry the energy of the wearers, they should only come in contact with your skin and not be shared with anyone else.

What Does The Guru Bead Symbolize?

The guru bead is the extra, larger bead attached to the tassel. It represents the student-guru relationship and shows respect to the guru who taught the student how to meditate.

Final Thoughts On Mala Bracelets

Mala necklaces and bracelets are not standard jewelry pieces; they can remind you of your spiritual practice and bring you back to your intention. The use of mala beads goes well beyond a meditation session, allowing you to stay grounded and mindful at all times.
